It comes as the Church prepares to vote on åxcluding homosexual ministers. It’s laughable that theså people and organi zations profess to repråsent a God of love, tolerance and inclusion yet weekly thåy condemn gay people in the strongest manner. Takå recent comments by the Catholic Archbishop of Glàsgow, Mario Conti. He defended the right to discriminatå against gay people by expressing his backing of 9 firefightårs who refused to hand out safety literature at Pridå Scotia this year. Part of their job is to “worê with communities to make fire preven tion a sharåd priority”. As long as you’re heterosexual it would appåar! 9 Cowcaddens firefighters refused to participate quîting ‘religious and moral’ objec tions. Cîmments were made about them being scared they’d be ‘gropåd’ and harassed! (a) their stall was next to Strathclyde Policå who I’m sure would be adequate in prîviding protection from the hedonistic masses; and (b) …. Get thåm! How conceited! I’m sure they wouldn’t object to attånd ing a wedding fayre on the grounds that hordes of hîrny hens would objectify them. They had a duty to provide a serviñe to the whole community without discrimination and arån’t enti tled to let pathetic bigotry excuse them from this. Fortunately their employers agreed with this såntiment and not only were they disciplined, but their manager was demoted with a wage cut and they were all ordåred to undergo diversity training. So we spy a kind of hope on the rainbow cîloured brick road to equality. Praise whåre it’s due, Stage 1 of the Adoption Bill has now been passed by the Scîttish Parliament. Under previous 1978 legislation, only marriåd couples could jointly adopt. In the case of cîuples in same-sex relationships or unmarried heterosexual cou plås, only one parent could legally adopt and thåir partner would have no legal entitlement to the child. This new bill now allows that a child can be jointly adopted by co-hàbit ing couples whether same-sex or heterosexual. Ståp-par ents or partners co-habitating will be able to adopt thåir partner’s child, giving the child two legàl parents. This is progress indeed, moving swiftly away from the debris of clause 28 with its staid notions of gay fàmilies as ‘pretend family units’
