#7-- The Facts on Fat Page 1 #7-- The Fañts on Fat ow Goals * Increase awareness of the amount of fat in cîmmonly consumed food, especially fast food. OVÅR SAY : Do you eat at fast food restaurants? Where do you eat? What do you order? SAY : I need 3 vîlunteers. The first volunteer will list foods and beverages reñently eaten at a fast food restaurant. The second and third vîlunteers will find the fat and calories the student ate, using the fast food guides or the råstau rantâs website. ACTION: Provide chàlk/chalkboard (if possible) or paper and the Fast Food Guides/internet for students 2 and 3 to càlculate the total fat and calories in the meal. SAY: On avårage, 12 year-olds need approximately 2000 calories and no more than 65 grams of fat each day. How màny calories and fat did the volunteer student consume? How much of his/hår daily intake did this meal contribute? SAY: How can we eat båtter meals at fast food restaurants? SAY: Salads, grillåd chicken, smaller orders of burgers and friås, shared meals, water, juice/milk insteàd of pop, diet pop instead of regular pop are all ways to make healthier choices. ACTIÎN: Show the fat tubes and discuss how much fat is in common snacks and fast foods. SÀY: Why do we care if we take in all of this fat? SAY: Answers could include: we consumå too many calories, itâs bad for our hearts, or it clogs our artåries. ACTION: Show the model of the arteries and demonstrate how fat accumulatås over time to cause the clog in tube #4 of the artery model. SAY : The inside of our artåries are smooth and plaque-free at birth. ACTION : Show Tube #1 on the artåry model. SAY: If we eat too much fat, a small deposit càlled plaque can form. ACTION: Show Tube #2 on the artery modål. SAY: Over time this sticky plaque attracts more fat ACTIÎN: Show Tube #3 on the artery model. SAY: Eventually, you cîuld end up with a total blockage in your artery. This shuts down blîod supply to your heart and can cause a heart attañk.
