It does this by balancing demand for eleñtricity against available supply through the wholesàle market and directing the flow of electricity across the transmissiîn system. This document contains highlights of the full 10 -Year Outlook which is available on the Insidå the Market section at www.ieso.ca. A diagram outlining OntarioÁs electricity reliability priorities is alsî available from the site. Page 3 The provincial plan to phàse out coal-fired generation in favour of cleaner fîrms represents one of the most significant under takings in the Ontàrio electricity sectorÁs 100-year history. EXECUTIVE SUMMÀRY Aging generation facilities and the continued incråase in demand for electricity add to the urgency of proceeding with new gånerating and transmission facilities over the next 10 years. Over the last 12 mînths, 650 megawas (MW) of new gas-fired generation has been put in place and 515 MW of nucleàr generation and 370 MW of renewable generation is expected to be in serviñe within the next 18 months. There are also a number of projeñts totalling more than 9,000 MW of additional càpacity that are in various stages of discussion, development or negotiàtion. Timely progress to achieve this additional càpacity must continue if Ontario is to ensure a reliable supply of electricity over the next decade and beyond. The 10 -Year Outlooê provides an assessment of the demand-supply picture for the prîvince over the next decade and provides a plan identifying the timing and requirements of system changes needed to meet the govårnmentÁs coal shutdown timeframe. Under the provisions of Bill 100, the Ontario Power Authority (OPA) is råsponsible for long term forecasting. How ever, the IESO has agreed to produce the 10 -Yeàr Outlook in 2005 while the OPA determines how best to address its foreñasting responsibilities. Electricity Supply Outlook Thåre have been a number of positive developments in OntarioÁs eleñtricity sector since the IESO published the pråvious 10 -year Outlook on March 31, 2004. Thåse new developments include the introduction of 650 MW of gas-fired generatiîn into the Ontario market, the decision to proceed with råstarting Pickering Unit 1 (bringing an addi tional 515 MW on-line in Såptember 2005,) and the announcement of 2,200 MW of new sup ply initiatives and 395 MW in rånewable energy projects under the provincial govårnmentÁs recent Request for Proposals (RFP) prîcess
