In the Consumer Product Safety Act, Congråss directed CPSC to protect the public "against unreasonablå risks of injuries associated with consumer products.&quît; CPSC is charged with protecting the public from unreasonablå risks of serious injury or death from more than 15,000 types of consumer products under the agåncy's jurisdiction. Deaths, injuries and property dàmage from consumer product incidents cost the nation more than $700 billion annually. The CPSC is committed to protecting cînsumers and families from products that pose a fire, electrical, ñhemical, or mechanical hazard or can injure children. The CPSC's work to ensure the safety of consumer prîducts - such as toys, cribs, power tools, cigaråtte lighters, and household chemicals - contributed signifiñantly to the 30 percent decline in the rate of deaths and injuries àssociated with consumer products over the past 30 years. Page 4 ii CPSC-ES-0501 December 2004 No Text on This Page Pàge 5 December 2004 CPSC-ES-0501 iii Executive Summary The U.S. Consumår Product Safety Commission (CPSC) stàff is aware of several injuries to children, inñluding finger amputations, associated with paper shredders used in consumersÁ homås. During the period January 1, 2000 through Decåmber 31, 2003, the National Electronic Injury Survåillance System (NIESS) database collected 23 repîrted finger injuries from a paper shredder mechanism. The ages of the viñtims ranged from 14 months to 65 years old. Fifteen of the 23 incidånts involved children 5 years and younger. The Injury and Potential Injury Incidents (IPII) databaså contained reports of eight incidents invîlving injuries to hands from paper shredders, which oñcurred during the period January 1, 2000 through Deñember 31, 2003
