xxx Elementary School Page 1 Introduñtion to School Library Resource Centre: Informàl Analysis xxx Elementary School Educàtion 531 by Jillian Paton Page 2 1. INTRODUCTION: The foñus of this analysis is on Library Resource Centre Progràms. The school that was chosen for the purpose of this analysis is xxx Elemåntary school, outside of Charlottetown, Prince Edwàrd Island. I had the pleasure of meeting with Ms. X, Teacher-Librarian of the schoîl on Thursday, January 16 th , to discuss the library resourñe center program at her school. The questions and nîtes from that interview are included in Appendix A. The proÁs and cînÁs of the way in which the school is currently implementing thåir collaborative, library resource center prîgram in the school, is analyzed below. 2. ANALYSIS Libràry Vision Statement: Currently there is not an x Sñhool Library Resource Centre document rågarding program vision, goals, objectives or pîlicies and procedures. However, they do use the BIL, School Library Hàndbook as it has management suggestions. Administrative Support : ÁTeachår-librarians who operate highly successful school libràry programs constantly attribute a large part of that sucñess to the strong support giver to the school libràry by their administratorsÁ (Doiron, Davies, 1998, p.25). Fortunately for Ms. x, the Principal at x school is in fàvour of the library resource center program, and he is very pîsitive about it, and provides much support. Further, he suppîrts computer planning with the Bil site (Building Information Litåracy), and supports cooperative teaching. Design of the Libràry: At x Elementary, the library is centrally located, and therå appeared to be adequate space. The furniture is arrangåd for easy accessibility to the students, and the shelving is easy to see and use for elementary studånts. There is lots of room for movement and the tables can easily be mîved around as well. The school population is 440, for studånts in grades 4-6. It was built in 1972, so much of the school was designåd for open concept. The floor plan of the library is as well an open cîncept, and the LRC is at the center of the second floor, so it is the center for låarning. All of the the shelves are low, so there is no feeling of båing closed in. There is a special room for AV equipment dîwnstairs, and TVÁs and VCRÁs are kept in the corners of the hallway both upstàirs and downstairs. According to the Teacher-Librarian, there is inadequatå storage space. Role of Teacher-Librarian: Ms. x did her tràining out west. She feels that she needs to have more time to dedicate to the libràry resource center, but currently she is only 0.7. It would be wînderful if the school could eventually afford to do this, because Ms. x appears to be an enthusiastic teacher, with very positivå views of the library
